Toll rides

Free open access and toll rides in the Leicestershire and Beyond area include:

DEFRA/Natural England rides - these rides are free bridlepaths opened by landowners and farmers to take advantage of EU stewardship schemes - see the DEFRA website.

Forestry Commission rides - in the Leicestershire and Beyond area the Forestry Commission offers free riding through a number of its sites, and some sites offer box parking and hitching posts - check where you can ride on Forestry Commission land and the facilities offered.

Toll rides - as well as the open access rides described above, there are a number of toll rides in the Leicestershire and Beyond area. Most of these are operated by The Toll Rides (Off-road) Trust, or TROT, and can be ridden on a day membership basis - find out about TROT toll rides in Leicestershire and Beyond.

One of the toll rides available is the Stapleford Estate ride. Consisting of 18 miles of off-road tracks over field margins and pasture land, the route is made of loops which means riders can vary the length of their route. Routes are marked with TROT markers. There is a choice of 6 month and 12 month membership and also day rates for riders. On joining you are given a hatband, map and route description. Forms for membership can be downloaded at www.tollrides.org.uk.

The Ride Leicestershire & Beyond area covers over 1,000 square miles of beautiful English countryside dotted with castles and stately homes, picturesque stone villages and market towns.

Offering miles of off-road bridleways, permissive routes and toll rides, horse riding provides a fabulous way to explore the area.
