Record number of Green Flags for city parks and green spaces

A record number of city parks and green spaces have been awarded Green Flags this year. Seventeen green flags have been awarded to Leicester by Keep Britain Tidy - recognising the areas as some of the best in the country.

All of Leicester's parks have won the accolade, including Victoria Park, Braunstone Park and Bennion Pools, which will be proudly flying the green flag for the first time ever.

Two of the city's cemeteries – Belgrave and Welford Road cemeteries – have also been awarded flags.

Others parks that will fly the green flag are Abbey Park, Castle Gardens, Evington Park, Humberstone Park, Spinney Hill Park, Knighton Park, Aylestone Hall Gardens, Western Park, Castle Hill Country Park and Shady Lane Arboretum.

Joint Green Flag awards with Leicestershire County Council are held for Watermead Park and Glen Parva and Glen Hills local nature reserve.

Cllr Piara Singh Clair, assistant city mayor responsible for culture, leisure and sport, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Leicester, with more of our parks and green spaces than ever before flying the coveted green flag.

“I want to thank all of the community volunteers and friends of our parks who have helped us to gain these awards.

“I'm particularly impressed that Braunstone and Victoria Park, along with Bennion Pools, have been awarded the flag for the first time ever. It's a real testament to all the hard work put in to improving these areas."

The Green Flag awards are managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, and act as a benchmark for parks and green spaces across the country.

Parks are judged on criteria such as whether they involve the community and are clean, welcoming and well-maintained.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

"All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
