The story of King Richard III in Leicester and Leicestershire named on Smithsonian list

The team behind the story of King Richard III in Leicester and Leicestershire are celebrating after featuring on the Smithsonian’s 21st Century Life List of 25 Great New Places to See. The list features wonders from across the world and was published in the September issue of the magazine.

The King Richard III Visitor Centre, Leicester Cathedral and Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre are all mentioned in the article and teams at the three Richard-related locations, who were part of the wider collaboration which successfully delivered the reinterment events in March, are continuing to work together to develop the king’s story.

Iain Gordon, Visitor Centre Director and lead of the group commented: “We are delighted that the Smithsonian has featured the three locations in their list and it echoes the opinions of the Lonely Planet Guide who included the Visitor Centre in their list of 26 world-wide must visit places in 2015. We are continuing to work with our partners to tell the incredible story of King Richard III in Leicester and Leicestershire, and this has certainly given us a resounding endorsement.“

The Very Revd David Monteith, Dean of Leicester said: “It is thrilling that we have been ranked 12th amongst some of the most extraordinary new places in the world to visit. Richard III’s discovery and his reburial with dignity and honour continues to draw visitors. They see what we often miss - namely that this story is extraordinary and it continues to fire the imagination and reveal new things. We are looking forward to welcoming the world.”

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for museums, added: “Bosworth Battlefield is an important part of the Richard III experience, as is demonstrated by this list in the Smithsonian.

“The centre has seen a 10% increase in visitor numbers this year and this is further recognition of its continuing success and appeal to a wide audience.”

Other entries in the list include the Ellis Island Hospital in New York City and the Cern Laboratory in Switzerland. The complete list can be seen at:
