Guide to Diwali celebrations now available

A SPECIAL guide to this year's fortnight-long Diwali celebrations is now available.

The handy brochure provides information about events taking place throughout the Diwali festival, maps, a guide to food and shopping, road closures and travel information.

It is widely available across the city and online, and will give people the opportunity to plan what they would like to see and do over the two weeks.

This year's celebrations will be bigger and better than ever before, with fire sculptures, digital sparklers, and a 100-foot illuminated Ferris wheel.

Other new activities include an Indian Summer Diwali Parade through the city centre, live Rangoli at the Clock Tower with international Rangoli artist Janak Chauhan, and a Diwali Mela Bazaar on Humberstone Gate West.

The celebrations kick off with the switch-on of the city’s Diwali lights on Sunday November 1.

Cllr Piara Singh-Clair, assistant city mayor for culture, leisure and sport said: “Diwali is an amazing time in the city and this year is going to be bigger and more dazzling than ever before.

"The Diwali guide is packed full of useful information and means people can plan what they would like to see and do throughout the celebrations.

“For anyone who’s never experienced Diwali before I hope that you will join us in Leicester to take part in and enjoy the festival of light.”

The booklet is available at Visit Leicester, in Gallowtree Gate, local leisure centres and libraries, museums and in many shops and bars across the city. It is also available online at:

Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are one of the biggest outside India and regularly attract more than 35,000 people to the city for the switch-on of its lights, and for its Diwali Day event.

Diwali is a religious event celebrated mainly by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. In Leicester, it brings together people of all faiths to enjoy the colours, lights and music that are a key part of the celebrations.
