PieFest is coming!

Pies are about to make a welcome return to Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire when the major PieFest food festival returns to the town this weekend (28-29 July 2018).

Sweet and savoury, hot and cold, for pie lovers there’s a whole range of pies to sample and buy from the traditional Melton Mowbray Pork Pie to the more outlandish creations, which it is claimed were made to satisfy the discerning palate of the Tsar of Russia, no less.

Vork Pies will be bringing their exquisitely presented vegan pies and fear not, even the gluten free have a range for choice at the Festival. For those who like their pies hot, there’s the Pie Kitchen where the pies will be popped in the oven and served with a choice of accompaniments including the mash, gravy and mushy peas from the aptly named Mushy Pea Company.

Pie makers will be coming from across the UK including producers from Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Rutland, Cheshire, Wiltshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Yorkshire.

At this year’s PieFest, visitors will enjoy all things pie-related, including sampling, buying, eating and even learning how to make their own pies. It’s going to be hot so it’s lucky that there’s going to be plenty of cold beer and cider, as well as ice cream produced by newly-arrived local favourites, Ferneley’s Ice Cream. There will also be cheese, cakes, wine, chutneys and more.

PieFest will also include talks, tastings, demonstrations and workshops on how to make the perfect pie.

The Pie Theatre programme includes talks on A History of Pies, Raising a Melton Mowbray Pork Pie and a ‘Pie Panel’ where visitors can put their pie and pastry queries to an expert panel of cooks and pie makers.

From being the home of the classic Melton Mowbray Pork Pie to hosting the annual British Pie Awards, Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire is regarded as the UK ‘Capital of Pies’. PieFest will run from 10am to 4pm on the weekend of 28-29 July 2018 at Melton Mowbray Market, Leicestershire LE13 1JY. All of the stands are undercover.

Admission is £4, in advance (£5 on the gate) and children under 16 free. To book tickets and for more information, please visit www.ukpiefest.co.uk

Matthew O’Callaghan from the Melton Mowbray Food Partnership, organiser of PieFest 2018 said: “Pies are a real staple of the British food industry and we have a wide range of tastes and flavours at this year’s PieFest for people to try and buy.

“The highlight of the event is a celebration of UK pie making but we’ll also have many other stalls with sweet and savoury treats, drinks and other food-related items for people to enjoy over the weekend.”
