James Bowie is Leicestershire's new Tourism Superstar

Leicestershire’s new Tourism Superstar has been unveiled at the Leicestershire Promotions Tourism and Hospitality Awards 2018, held at the Athena in Leicester on 29 November 2018. James Bowie, former owner of The Belmont Hotel in Leicester was the worthy recipient of the award, in honour of his 50 years’ contribution to the local tourism industry.

After gaining an HND in hotel management and initial industry roles in Zurich, Birmingham and France, James started his career at The Belmont Hotel in Leicester in 1967 as assistant manager and during his time there, has also been manager and managing director.

Locally, James was a founder member of the Leicester Association of Tourist and Conference Hotels, Vice Chair of the Leicester Tourism Development Action Plan, founding Director, Chair and President of Leicestershire Promotions, founding member and Trustee of Friends of New Walk charity, a District Councillor for Harborough District Council, founding Director of Leicestershire Business Voice, and President of the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce and Board Member of East Midlands Chamber.

On a national level, James has also been a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality, a Member and Chair of the British Hotels, Restaurants and Caterers Association, BHA and UK Hospitality, President Member of Best Western Hotels, and Director of Best Western Europe and Best Western International.

The Belmont Hotel is an award-winning independent hotel in Leicester and was owned by the Bowie family for 85 years. In 2017, the hotel won ‘Most Enjoyable Stay – Hotel’ and was also Highly Commended in the ‘Best Front of House Team’ category in the Leicestershire Tourism and Hospitality Awards, as well as achieving 4 star status from the AA and two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence.

James Bowie commented: “I’m delighted and amazed to receive this award. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in such a fast-moving industry and have seen great progress over the years. It’s been an honour to contribute to the tourism sector in Leicester and Leicestershire, and I’ve particularly enjoyed working alongside Leicestershire Promotions and helping them to develop and grow over this time.”
