“Hotel has gone downhill from previous stays”

This was our third stay over about 4 years. The first time was excellent ( was Barcelo then), second time showed signs of going downhill and this time was most disappointing ,again management had changed probably.
We weren't informed when booking our stay that the restaurant was pretty much fully booked so only found out on arrival there were two available times slots to eat of 6:15 and 8:15 pm, we took the latter though wasn't ideal for the children though earlier was a bit too early and we wanted to enjoy the hotel pool facilities.
The menu choice was a complete shambles with different menus being mixed and matched, no indication of children's prices when having half portions and general confusion all round as our waitress had no idea what she was doing and had to keep going to ask her manager about every query we made. The managers seemed very superfluous to requirements as certainly weren't helping in the smooth running of the evening service.
Although this was a later booking there should still have been a reasonable choice of food, the carvery had beef with a limited choice of vegetables no Yorkshire pudding as would usually be expected with beef. There was next to nothing left on the so called children's buffet and clearly wasn't going to be restocked.The turkey had just scraps left which I couldn't believe they still had out planning to serve. The children had the roast dinner but then had over an hour wait for dessert which was just a banana split so shouldn't have taken too long to prepare, again we had to ask as no one noticed they were still waiting. We should have been advised when booking the restaurant that there wouldn't be much left at this time of evening and we would have maybe gone to eat elsewhere though options are quite limited in the area which is why we planned to eat at the hotel. In most restaurants it doesn't matter what time you eat you still get the same menu choice and attention but the hotel one looked like it was winding down ready to close any moment and no one could really be bothered with attending to us.
We were given another menu but told there would be a long wait as a wedding was taking place which took priority.
We were the last family to leave and feeling quite tired and fed up at the long wait and lack of efficient service , drinks orders were also ignored and another table had the wrong wine given to them three times before the correct one came!
The swimming pool arrangements had changed from previous stays which we only found out once we were actually in the pool area after being told it was a timed hour long session, previously it had been unlimited and as we had a while to wait until our dinner reservation thought we would make the most of some time in the pool. It seemed a bit unnecessary to have to leave when it wasn't overly busy .
Overall the hotel has gone disappointingly downhill. The level of staff training extremely poor and most having a very 'couldn't care less 'attitude with the bare minimum of service and information being given and all just seeming like a bit too much trouble for them to put any effort in to making the stay a pleasant one.
The Stay Play Explore deal is very popular with families yet overheard another family asking if the children would get the activity packs they had done before and informed no they wouldn't.. The hotel still has the dog pictures up in places which used to form part of a game for the children to spot them round the hotel and get a little prize at the end, it's a bit of a joke to keep them there when no such arrangement is in place anymore, I know my children really enjoyed this before and asked why it had stopped.
On checking out they tried to charge us another £40 but couldn't say what it was for, we paid as we went so knew there was nothing to settle up.
Whilst the Stay Play Explore offer is something we would do again as overall it is good value, next time we will definitely be trying one of the other hotels, just sorry we didn't do it this time, we were going on its previous reputation and remembering our first visit but now after two further stays which didn't match up we won't waste our money again. This was our only break away this year and had higher expectations and were really looking forward to it but it wasn't enjoyable and wasn't the much needed relaxing weekend we had hoped for.
I hope you will take notice of the issues raised with a view to changing things for the better. I only wish I had read the reviews on Trip Advisor before we went ,not after ,as I don't seem to be the only unhappy customer. It really is such a shame that a lovely hotel like this was is now in its present state, while the facilities are there so much needs to change in terms of customer service.
