03/05/2012

Visitors to Leicester's Jewry Wall Roman bath site will be able to enjoy a new audio tour guiding them through the site's history.

The free new audio guide to the Roman site, off St Nicholas Circle, is now available to download from the Leicester Museums website.

The five-part tour provides a guided journey around Jewry Wall and gives a fascinating profile of one of Leicester's most famous landmarks, which formed part of the Roman town's public baths.

Jewry Wall's ruins are believed to be among the tallest surviving pieces of Roman masonry in the UK.

The audio tour has been provided by the Friends of Jewry Wall Museum, and gives visitors the opportunity to discover how the Romans in Leicester bathed and relaxed at this important site.

Full instructions on how to follow the tour are provided at the beginning of the audio tour.

To download the audio files, visit the Leicester Museums website: www.leicester.gov.uk/museums and follow the links to the Jewry Wall Museum web page.

Leicester assistant city mayor responsible for heritage, leisure and sport, Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: "Jewry Wall Museum is a very important Roman site, and this audio tour is a great way to bring that history to life for museum visitors.

"There's a wealth of information on how the baths formed part of Roman life in the city on this guide, which will be a real treat for people wanting to learn more about Jewry Wall."
