All aboard for Transport Festival

03/05/2012

Snibston's Transport Festival is just the ticket for a great day out and this year promises to be even bigger and better than ever.

The festival, taking place at Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville on Sunday 15th May, will have an abundance of exciting exhibits on show and activities for the whole family. Last year the event attracted over 1,500 people and is hoping for even more in 2011.

One of the main attractions on the day will be a Dakota Battle of Britain Flypast which will grace the skies providing a fantastic opportunity to see this rare aircraft in full flight (subject to weather conditions and mechanical clearance).

For train lovers, there will be a visiting steam locomotive courtesy of Chasewater Railway. The loco will be steaming all day and trips along the historic railway will be just £1.50 per person.
With a variety of road vehicles on show, some vintage and classic, there will be something to capture the eye of every transport enthusiast. Exhibits include American Hot Rods, British Muscle Cars and a range of commercial vehicles.

The steam train and vintage vehicles will be a big draw for people, but there will also be plenty of children's activities and entertainment from ‘The Fidgety Feet ', a Strolling Dixieland Fun Band.
With the chance to see some of the wider museum collections, a tethered hot air balloon and a farrier, the day really will celebrate a wide selection of transport objects.

On the other hand, a full craft fayre with stalls ranging from jewellery, wood turners, books, children's toys, household gifts, aromatherapy and art will also be provided to enhance the day for all interests.

Refreshments will be available and the usual interactive exhibits will be on offer at the museum as well as some of Leicestershire County Council's collections which are usually held in store.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said: "Snibston's Transport Festival is always a huge hit and really does draw in the crowds. As usual no one will be disappointed and there will be something to appeal to everyone from transport enthusiasts to all members of the family with such a fantastic array of things to see and do.

"The visiting steam train and the flypast will certainly make the day, but I am looking forward to seeing the huge range of transport on show. I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the show."

The festival is taking place from 10am-5pm. Standard entry charges apply.
