Marking Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary in 2016
A Midlands-based tourism partnership comprising Leicester Shire Promotions, Shakespeare’s England and Marketing Birmingham, has successfully bid for £174,000 of funding from VisitBritain, through the GREAT UK Challenge Fund. The grant will support a major ‘Shakespeare 2016’ tourism campaign aimed at attracting visitors from North America and other key international markets to the East and West Midlands.
Next year marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. The campaign will use this milestone to celebrate and promote the region's connections with Shakespeare and his literary works. Leicester Shire Promotions and its regional partners will deliver PR and marketing activity, as well as an engagement programme targeting oversees school and university groups, in order to globally showcase the heritage sites, attractions and world-class curriculum linked to the playwright.
Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicester Shire Promotions, said: "We're delighted to be working in partnership with our colleagues in the Midlands to promote this major milestone. We have always recognised that our visitors enjoy exploring beyond boundaries, enjoying the breath of attractions on offer across the region. We are proud to be playing a leading role in this new way of thematic working.
Conference successes worth over £1 million
Leicester Shire Promotions has announced that its event bidding campaign has helped to secure a number of national and international conferences and events to be held in Leicester and Leicestershire in 2016, contributing an estimated extra £1.156 million * to the local economy.
This figure is based on a number of major events booked at various venues in the city and county next year. These were secured by the Leicester and Leicestershire Conference Bureau, working in partnership with, and supporting local partners and venues.
The conferences include the Congress of Polish Student Societies in the UK, Chartered Institute for Archaeology, Cycle City Active City, Street Choir Festival and the International Association of Media and Communication Research. The total number of delegates for these events is around 3,500.
