Thomas Cook was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire on 22nd November 1808. From 1841 until his death in 1892, Cook lived in Leicester, where he contributed much to the city through his work with the Leicester Temperance Society. It was this work that indirectly led to the establishment of his travel business. He organised a public excursion to a Loughborough Temperance Rally in 1841 which was a great success. Recognising a good business opportunity, Cook was soon promoting excusions to towns all over England and Scotland. 1955 saw his first trip aborad, and within a year he was arranging holidays all over the continent. The business grew and grew. Today the name Thomas Cook is synonymous with world travel. As the plaque on his grave in Welford Road Cemetery states: 'He brought travel to the millions'.
