Rutland
Rutland lies to the east of Leicestershire and to the west of Lincolnshire and at its heart you will find Rutland Water - Europe's largest man-made lake. On offer here are many outdoor watersports and activities, including sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and fishing. One of the best ways to explore Rutland Water is to hire a bike and cycle around the shoreline. An alternative way to see the lake is to take a cruise on The Rutland Belle, which operates regularly throughout the summer months. Walkers can ramble along the shoreline or embark on a more energetic trek on the Rutland Round - a long distance walking route of 65 miles through quiet winding lanes, gentle rolling fields and quintessential English villages.
Gardeners will enjoy Geoff Hamilton's famous Barnsdale Gardens, whilst bird lovers will appreciate the Anglian Birdwatching Centre at Egleton. The nature reserve is home to the UK's first ospreys hatched in England for 150 years and the British Birdwatching Fair is held here every August. Other local experiences to be enjoyed are Rutland brewed Real Ales, The Rutland County Show, Burghley House, Rockingham Castle, Music in Lyddington, Lyddington Bede House and Tolethorpe Hall famous for its enchanting outdoor Shakespeare Festival productions held every summer.
