On the last Sunday of the month, the Magazine Gateway and Leicester Castle Great Hall are open to the public from 11am-3pm. Visitors are invited to explore the building on their own or book onto a guided tour with one of our expert Blue Badge guides, who can share their detailed knowledge of the history of these fascinating buildings and explain features of architectural interest.
The Magazine is a 15th century entrance gateway to the former Newarke religious precinct that was later used to store the weaponry and gunpowder of the town’s militia during the English Civil War. During the 20th century it was used as a WWI recruiting station. Interesting features of the building include historical graffiti dating back to the 16th century.
Built in the 12th century, the timber framed Great Hall has hosted many illustrious visitors including Richard III and other kings. It hosted Parliament in the 14th and 15th centuries and today features an original Victorian criminal courtroom.
Come and learn more about these important heritage sites with a guided tour.
