Twycross Zoo CEO wins national prestigious award
Twycross Zoo is pleased to announce that CEO Dr Sharon Redrobe has won the prestigious Vitalise Businesswoman of the Year Award 2015 in recognition of the remarkable difference she is making to animal conservation. Dr Redrobe was one of six finalists in her category, in a ceremony held in Birmingham on Friday 9 October involving more than 500 women.
Renowned internationally as a wildlife vet and passionate conservationist with over 20 years’ experience working in academia, charity and business sectors, Dr Redrobe has focussed on advancing knowledge of the natural world through university lectureships, addressing global conferences, publishing research, establishing award-winning programmes at three UK zoos and starring in a zoo-based TV series. She has held senior management positions in two large charitable zoos and is on the Board of an African-based ape rescue charity.
Dr Redrobe is currently spearheading Twycross Zoo’s ambitious Masterplan, which will transform the 88 acre site in rural Leicestershire through a major £55 million capital investment programme over the next 20 years – aiming to become one of the region’s, and the UK’s, leading visitor attractions. The ambition and motivation to see these plans through to fruition is already paying off as Twycross Zoo has seen a 6% increase in visitor numbers in 2015.
Speaking of her award, Dr Redrobe says, “I'm so delighted and honoured to win this prestigious award in recognition of the great work we are doing at Twycross Zoo. I have the privilege of leading an outstanding team of enthusiastic and talented people, together with a supportive Board of Trustees. The last few years have been challenging, so we are all delighted that the new Business plan and Masterplan for Twycross Zoo - putting the animals first - is delivering increased visitor numbers and we believe that our continued investment in the habitats on site will lead us from strength to strength. This all caught the attention of the judges and I am honoured to receive this award for the whole of Twycross Zoo.”
Now in its 33rd year, the Vitalise Women of the Year Luncheon & Awards celebrate the achievements of exceptional women nationwide – both in the world of business and personal achievement. Keynote speakers at the ceremony included Baroness Karren Brady CBE, small business adviser, Conservative Party, and Vice Chairman, West Ham United FC, and Michelle Mone, OBE, Founder, Ultimo.
The Award’s sponsors included Barclays, Hobbs London, Freeths, Bentley, British Airways, Deloitte, Pertemps, SCC, Hilton Birmingham Metropole and IXL Events. Previous winners include campaigner and fundraiser Claire Lomas and Jenny Campbell of YourCash.
