Spending review boosts investment in tourism

Following the spending review announced in Parliament yesterday, we are delighted that Ministers have been able to make a compelling case for tourism and that both VisitBritain and VisitEngland core budgets remain unchanged.

The Government has also announced £40 million for a Discover England fund over three years for the development of English tourism products.

On top of this, the GREAT campaign will receive an uplift in funding, with a budget of £60 million a year. Whilst our budget for this is still to be confirmed, given the Government’s commitment to inbound tourism and our track record as an effective and trusted partner, we are confident that VisitBritain and tourism will continue to play a pivotal role in this campaign. Overall, this is a resounding result for tourism, in a challenging spending round.

To ensure that both VisitBritain and VisitEngland’s activities are co-ordinated and aligned and that maximum funding is channelled to front line delivery, the Government has announced that VisitBritain and VisitEngland will not separate. Changes to our governance arrangements will mean that VisitEngland will report into VisitBritain and the VisitEngland board will be an advisory body.

VisitBritain will have over-arching responsibility for setting the strategic framework and for driving growth in international leisure and business tourism, including the development of English tourism products that appeal to overseas markets. We will maintain distinct activities to develop and market English products through a dedicated plan and with a ring-fenced budget.
