Leicester College students to learn about Tourism Awards

Students from Leicester College will get first-hand experience of the local tourism industry as they get involved with this year’s Leicestershire Promotions Tourism & Hospitality Awards.

The 29 students from Leicester College’s Higher Levels, Higher Education and Foundation degree courses in Tourism and Events, will attend this year’s awards ceremony at Athena in Leicester on 30 November 2017.

Organiser of the event, Leicestershire Promotions, will host sessions on event strategy and a post-event de-brief for the students. In addition, those students attending on the night will also be set a challenge relating to the event, from the organiser’s perspective, as part of their coursework.

Jennie Porter, Programme Lead in Travel and Tourism at Leicester College said: “We’re delighted that Leicestershire Promotions has provided our students with this exciting opportunity. Working in the community is a key part of their courses and by getting involved with the organisation of the Leicestershire Tourism Awards, we can offer an invaluable experience that they couldn’t get otherwise through their classroom activities.”

Riah Ambasa, second year Foundation degree student in Events and Tourism at Leicester College said: "This is a great opportunity to build links with a local organisations and to gain a better insight into the events sector."

Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicestershire Promotions added: “We’ve worked with Leicester College and their tourism courses for several years now. The Tourism and Hospitality Awards are a glittering affair and we’re confident that this year will be the grandest yet. I’m glad that the students can share in this experience and understand how the effective management of such an event is key to its success.”

There are 77 separate organisations shortlisted for this year’s awards including conference venues, visitor attractions, museums, cafes and restaurants, accommodation providers, festivals and events, and market towns. Details on the finalists can be found at www.goleicestershire.com/finalists2017
