Launch of family friendly museum award 2016
The 2016 Family Friendly Museum Award is launched, giving you and your visitors the chance to say why your museum, gallery, heritage site, science centre or historic home gives the warmest welcome to families. The Award is the biggest museum award in the country – and the only one where families pick the winner.
Nominations can be made by anyone – front of house, marketing, the director, volunteers, curators, café workers. You can even invite your visitors to nominate you. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a giant National museum or a tiny two-room local gallery. You can be volunteer-run or boast a team of curators. You can be best known for your outstanding collection of French 19th century porcelain or be alive with high-tech interactives (or both!). What matters most is that you go that extra mile to provide an excellent family friendly experience.
Give us as much detail as possible about your museum. What is so special about your offer to families? What do you do that really stands out? Tell us lots – we love to hear about all your efforts and achievements. Take a look at the Kids in Museums Manifesto. How does your museum match up to the Manifesto’s 20 points on how to make a museum family friendly? Use the Award as an opportunity for a family friendly audit, using the Kids in Museums Manifesto as a guide. Consult your visitors and include their feedback in your nomination.
How to send in a nomination:
Email: firstname.lastname@example.org and tell us why you think your museum should win. If you are sending large documents, please send as hard copy to address below, not as attachments.

What happens next?
A group of volunteers sift through all the hundreds of nominations and whittles them down to a shortlist. The shortlist will be announced on 19 July 2016.
Over the summer, the shortlisted museums are road-tested anonymously by families, using the Kids in Museums Manifesto as a guide to their family friendliness.
