A feast of fun for children at this year's East Midlands Food Festival

There’s plenty for the whole family to see, do, taste and buy at this year’s East Midlands Food Festival from 7-8 October in Melton Mowbray.

One of the new features at this year’s festival will be a Kids Food Zone that will teach the children about food with workshops on baking, chocolate making and pies.

Children can enter a number of baking/cooking competitions during the festival including Best Children’s Baker, Best Cake Maker, Best Pie Maker, Best Bread Maker and Best Cookie/Biscuit Maker. There will be two levels of entry - one for primary school age and one for secondary school age.

Best Children’s Recipe – based on the best and most interesting recipe submitted by a child using ingredients likely to be found at the Food Festival. Entries must be submitted in advance to info@meltonmowbrayfoodfestival.co.uk by 5pm on Thursday 5 October. The winning entry will be prepared by celebrity chef, Rachel Green in the Food Theatre at 2pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday during the Festival.

Best School Meal - the most interesting school meal submitted by a child of primary school age and of secondary school age. Entries must be submitted in advance to info@meltonmowbrayfoodfestival.co.uk by 5pm on Thursday 5 October. The winners will be announced during the Festival at 2pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday in the Food Theatre.

The East Midlands Food Festival will be held at Melton Mowbray Market and will showcase some of the UK’s best locally-produced food and drink from around 200 exhibitors. There will also be live demonstrations from professional chefs in the Food Theatre, entertainment and street food with hot dishes from around the world.

Children under 16 enter free and adult tickets are priced at £6 (£5 in advance). Advance tickets are on sale from the Visit Leicester centre in Leicester and Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray, or online from www.meltonmowbrayfoodfestival.co.uk

Matthew O’Callaghan, organiser of the East Midlands Food Festival said: “We’re proudly flying the flag for local produce so it’s great to be able to get children involved in this year’s festival. As well as the workshops on offer, we’d love to hear from all of those budding ‘junior masterchefs’ for our children’s competitions.”

The Festival is organised by the Melton Mowbray Food Partnership with main sponsorship from Samworth Brothers and the support of the Melton Mowbray Market.
