Special projects - Light up your building in red 2016
As part of the City and County’s commemoration of the centenary of the First World War we are again inviting organisations to Light Up their Buildings in Red. We have had a great response over the last couple of years and the impact of the red illumination has been so eye catching and has helped to promote the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
We are hoping to encourage more organisations to take part this year either by illuminating their building(s) or other iconic structures. We are writing to you in anticipation that you will be able to participate directly or can help us to spread the message by sharing this letter with others that you know who would be willing to support this initiative.
For the duration of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, which runs from 27th October to Remembrance Sunday on 13th November, we would like to see buildings and structures illuminated with red floodlights. We don’t want anyone to go to an unnecessary expense, and so this would only be a realistic proposition if the structure is already illuminated. If that is the case, then by changing to a red light bulb or by covering an existing floodlight with a red polycarbonate or plastic filter will provide the red illumination.
We hope that this will provide a simple but powerful expression of your support for the Poppy Appeal and the centenary of the First World War.
This initiative is not national RBL policy, but rather a local initiative being taken by Leicestershire’s WW1 Reference Group with the support of the Leicestershire & Rutland RBL.
Send an email to Lieutenancyoffice@leics.gov.uk if you are taking part in this initiative this year and we'll list your organisation's name on our listing here.
