Every week, many traditional markets take place throughout Leicestershire. From bustling street markets to fur and feathers auctions, cattle markets and antique fairs, there's always something going on!
Leicester Market
Leicester itself is well known for its large covered market, steeped in over 700 years of history. Located right at the heart of the city centre, it is open six days a week and always a hive of activity. The large outdoor area is packed full of fruit and vegetable stalls, as well as clothes, fabric and bric a brac. Behind the Corn Exchange in the Market Centre are many more indoor stalls, selling fresh fish, meat and cheeses. These include the local specialities of Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and Stilton. It's worth just browsing to soak up the busy, friendly atmosphere.
New for 2009, the Leicester Farmers Market will take place on the first Thursday of every month on Humberstone Gate. The Market will offer a great range of delicious locally produced food and drink. Browse fresh local produce direct from the farmer - from quality beef, lamb pork and poultry, sausages, ostrich, quiches and pies to breads, cakes, cheeses, beer, cider, preserves and honey (to name but a few!). For more information contact Leicestershire Food Links
Just outside the city centre is the Beaumont Leys Market - a popular local market within Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre, opened in 1984 and still growing.
Melton Mowbray Markets
Of the Leicestershire's many country markets, Melton Mowbray is the most well known. This traditional market town holds a variety of different markets and is the only place in Leicestershire with a market recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086. Tuesday is the main market day, with a busy street market in the market square, and a cattle market at Scalford Road in the morning. This is one of the largest cattle markets in the country, and a wide variety of livestock is auctioned weekly. Melton also plays host to a fur and feather auction (birds and small animals), as well as horse sales, and antique/craft fairs. See below for times.
