Details

On the last Sunday of the month, the Magazine Gateway is open to the public from 11am-3pm. Visitors are invited to explore the building on their own or book onto a guided tour with one of our expert Blue Badge guides, who can share their detailed knowledge of the history of this fascinating building and explain features of architectural interest.

The Magazine is a 15th century entrance gateway to the former Newarke religious precinct that was later used to store the weaponry and gunpowder of the town’s militia during the English Civil War. During the 20th century it was used as a WWI recruiting station. Interesting features of the building include historical graffiti dating back to the 16th century.
