Local producers in Melton Mowbray
Well known for its food and drink, Melton Mowbray is home to many local producers of the authentic pork pie, cheeses, crafty beers and ales and many farmer shops and markets.
One of the town's greatest claims to fame is the pork pie, recognisable throughout the UK and beyond, and is a traditional staple food from the family Christmas breakfast to a summer picnic. At Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe where Dickinson & Morris has been baking pork pies since 1851, you can find out more about how the pies are made at the oldest remaining bakers of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie in the town centre today.
As well as pies, Melton Mowbray also has a traditional association with cheese. Home to the annual Artisan Cheese Fair, with its associated Artisan Cheese Awards, and also several local producers of the famous 'King of English cheeses', Stilton, honoured with Protected Designation of Origin status, meaning it can only be made in Leicestershire and neighbouring counties. The traditional Red Leicester cheese has also undergone a recent renaissance with a couple of local dairies now producing the distinctive orange-coloured cheese after a gap of several years.
